5/6/15 Wednesday Case Study (50 word min)

CJ is a data analyst for a major casino and has to work after normal business hours to finish an important project.  He realizes he is missing data that was sent to his coworker Dane.  Recently, CJ noticed Dane typing his password and learned what it is.  He decides to log into Dane's computer and resend the data to himself.

Upon doing so, CJ sees an open e-mail to a local sports book regarding gambling bets Dane placed over the last several days.  CJ knows all casino employees are forbidden to engage in gambling activities to avoid any hint of conflict of interest.  He knows he should report this but would have to admit to violating the company's information technology regulations by logging into Dane's computer.  If he warns Dane to stop his betting, he would also have to reveal the source of his information.  Dane would know he used his password.  What does CJ do in this situation?

  1. CJ should talk to Dane about the gambling and admit what he was doing on his computer. If CJ were to tell the company, then both of them would lose their jobs. This would be bad for both of them, but if they talk they might be able to work something out. CJ has to confront Dane about being on the computer anyways, so the sooner the better.

  2. Ask Dane if he has been gambling, and if he lies, then tell him that he found it on his computer. Just tell Dane that he was missing some of his information, and that he had a reason to look on his computer. If Dane doesn't stop gambling tell someone with more authority.

  3. I would ask Dane if he has been gambling, if he does not tell you the truth, then tell him that he found it on his computer. Tell him he had a reason to look on his computer because he was missing some information. If Dane doesn't stop, maybe tell someone that he may listen to.

  4. Ask if he had been gambling. Since you know the truth you can see if he lies and if he does tell him you needed on him computer to get some data. Say if he doesnt stop then you would have to tell.

  8. I would talk to him about the gambling and that you know his password to his computer. I would also talk to him and tell him that you are not going to talk to anybody unless he agrees to quit. Because both of them could potential lose their job over the actions that they have been making at work
