The Case of the National Spotlight
Your men's soccer team has had quite a season . While they came into the season ranked #9 nationally, they won some close games and moved up to #2 with only one loss on the season . Going into the last weekend, four days before they were supposed to leave for the national tournament, a lot of the team decided to go to a party . The party was at an off-campus house and the hosts made sure that alcohol was in no short supply .Things quickly got out of hand and in the end, the police were called to break up the party .
Details are pretty fuzzy, but in the end, 43 students were cited for underage drinking, nine students went to the hospital because of alcohol poisoning, and one student died from injuries sustained while falling off of a balcony . He was too drunk to catch his balance once he started to fall .
When interviewed by the media, the soccer coach insisted that his players who were there are good boys that made a bad choice . When asked if he would cancel the trip to the National tournament, the coach responded by saying, "Are you crazy? We earned that trip and we're not gonna let this stop us from our goals ." While the coach would later admit the timing of the statement was unfortunate, his comments have nonetheless led to a media frenzy focused on entitled student athletes who are "Above the Law ."
The Board of Trustees has convened an emergency meeting to discuss what should be done because this is the fourth major house party of the fall where the police needed to be called . At the time of the meeting, the team was only a day away from leaving for the tournament and it still wasn't clear how many soccer players were involved and to what extent they were involved with the party . The Board has asked you to give them a recommendation of what should be done .
> If you were President, what would you say should be done?
I would let them go because they did earn there spot. Don't let the teammates involved in the party play in the game unless then can show that they deserve it and are sorry. Let them know that if they ever do it again in there time of being there they will no longer get to play and serious actions will be taken. I think you should let them go
ReplyDeleteI would not let them play because as it says it is the 4th Major incident. They do not deserve to play. The coach keeps letting them doing it with no consequences. They did something illeagal so they do not deserve to play in the national tournament. I would be very unhappy with the coach and would fire him for lettting them do this unacceptable behavior.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't let them go because even if they had earned a spot because they could just go and do it again. If they don't get to do something they really care about and realize that drinking would ruin their chances if they get the chance again, then you could almost guarantee that they wouldn't do it again.

ReplyDeleteI would take the people that didn't get in trouble. No matter who it is would be expelled if they did this. The players would be dismissed from the team and possibly expelled. I would make sure everyone outside of the accident gets rewarded. I know its the championship game and were likely to lose without most of our top players but then again it wouldn't be fair to those who did nothing wrong.
ReplyDeleteI would take the people that didn't get in trouble and leave the people that did. If the people that got in trouble complain, that is there fault because they should've known not to drink because they had that big game coming up. Since they got a consequence and couldn't go, I am pretty sure they won't do it again before they get to do something they really wanted to do.
ReplyDeleteThe people that got in trouble don't get the opportunity to go because of the choices they made. I would take the people that were innocent along and leave the rest behind. The good ones still deserve to get to have the experience the others do not because they broke the rules.
ReplyDeleteI think I would make the people who were at the party stay home from the tournament. And let the people who were not involved with it go. It wouldn't be fair to the people who didn't get in trouble to make them stay home when they have been working all season and haven't made the mistakes.
ReplyDeletei would allow the people who werent in trouble to go, but i would not allow the ones who did. I would not feel any remorse for those who got in trouble because it was there choice to do it. Maybe if they are punished now then they will probably not do it again
ReplyDeleteI think that I would probably talk to all of them and them and then talk to the team members individually. I believe that I would probably not let any of the team members go to nationals. I would probably talk to them and tell them that they are not going to go because of what they had done even though it may have been a one time thing.
ReplyDeleteI would allow them to compete because of the fact that they simply earned it. But.... I would force them to suspend the players who got in trouble for the first 5 games of the next season. I would then after the tournament suspend the ones who got in trouble from school for a month to teach them a lesson.
ReplyDeletei would let them play, everyone makes a stupid mistake no matter how high and mighty they seem. they did earn this so there is no reason to not let them play. their actions are just one of many, they were not the only ones there, so they should not be the only ones in fault even if they were in trouble.
ReplyDeleteLet the ones who didn't do anything bad play on as well as it could be there first one they were part of but give them guidelines next time and suspend them for some time
ReplyDeletei would let them play because everybody makes choices that they arent proud of. and they worked hard for along time and i dont think that they can ruin that hard work in one night.
ReplyDeleteI would not let them play. This is the fourth major incident and someone died. This is not something that I would take lightly. If they were all underage and the majority of them were at the party, then how much team is left? I don't know if I would even let those people go because they did not influence their peers to not go to this party.
ReplyDeleteI would not allow them to play. This was their fourth major incident. A kid even died during this party. They were all underage, and should have known better. I wouldn't let the other kids go to the game either because they could have at least discouraged their peers to not go to the party.
